Well, I am not reading it anymore…I finished it today. I had read Kite Runnerfor my book club and was so moved by the writing that I immediately went to Amazon and pre-ordered his next book. I was not disappointed.
A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini is set in Afghanistan much like Kite Runner. This traces the time frame from the Soviet invasion until the present following the lives of two women whose paths cross and intertwine. Hosseini is such an amazing storyteller. I literally have to force myself to stop reading every night and go to bed because I am so captivated by these characters.
When reading, I am reminded again how fortunate I am to live the life I live. The plight of women around the world is really astonishing. The lack of opportunities afforded them and the abuses they suffer sadden me. I must admit I knew very little about Afghanistan before reading this book and am now I feel as though I have gotten a small window into the years of suffering that have gone on there. Yet, Hosseini’s stories offer such hope and healing. That is why you can’t put his books down.
This is truly one of the best books I have ever read. I dare say, it may even be better than Kite Runner. It is not a light read by any means and I was crying a few chapters in, but I think you will be moved by this amazing story. I think I will be choosing something a bit fluffier for my next read. If you have read A Thousand Splendid Suns, let me know what you think.
