Frugal Fridays- CVSing January 31, 2008

Filed under: Frugal Fridays — thediaperdiaries @ 9:29 pm

frugalfridays.jpg  Ok, if you are coming over from Crystal’s blog, I am preachin’ to the choir. You most likely have been CVSing your little heiny off and don’t need my advice, a mere CVS rookie. However, if you are one of my regular readers, let me share my new hobby.

I have always loved shopping, more specifically finding a great bargain. In the past few months I have taken this to a new, spectacular level. A while ago, I blogged about my recent discovery of a helpful website, The Grocery Game. If you aren’t familiar with it, I highly suggest you check it out. Anyway, with the help of this website, I have been combining weekly store sales with coupons to maximize my savings. I have been really excited with my savings at the grocery store.

So last week, I added CVS to my Grocery Game subscription. I have an always had an affinity for CVS. I love the colors, the layout, the cleanliness. I also love that they supplied a big hunk of Lily’s college fund when she landed on their diapers. I have never before (and probably never will again) shown a picture of my kids on my blog, but if you want to see Lily at 7 months, here you go.

Anyway, I love how much I can save there. Now, I am not a pro. There are women who dedicate their days and nights to this and have made it an artform. Yes, Jenny I am talkin’ bout you. Plus in my efforts to declutter, I try not to buy stuff I don’t need or won’t use. However, I am having fun watching my savings rack up. Today I spent $34. I got over $80 worth of stuff. The best part is I got $17 worth of extra care bucks to spend like cash the next time I shop. So that pretty much means I spent $17.

There are lots of websites to help you make sense of the circulars and coupons. I basically combine what I get from The Grocery Game with the tips at Money Saving Mom. There are tons more out there, but I can’t possibly spend more time on the web than I already do. Well, I could, but I think my husband and children would like me to occasionally come around. Happy CVSing!

Things I Love Thursday- Pampers January 30, 2008

Filed under: Things I Love Thursdays — thediaperdiaries @ 10:13 pm

pampers.jpg When I had my first daughter and it came to pick her diapers, I went right to Pampers. To me they were just the diaper I most associated with quality. So I tip my hat to whoever is behind marketing over there. You have effectively sold me. In the 4 1/2 years since then, I have tried other diapers and even regularly use some of the cheaper brands to save a bit of money, but I have a confession to make. Pampers are still my favorite. I never have to worry about a tab tearing or a poop explosion. Remember those newborn poop explosions? Oh fond memories…

Anywho, I trust this brand. So when they contacted me to send me some free Pampers Cruisers to review, I was all over it. I love these diapers. They are so thin, yet incredibly absorbent. Let’s just say that I neglected to change Hannah’s diaper for a while. Not that I would, but for the sake of argument (ahem). Let’s say I may have experience with their absorbency and leave it at that.  They have very flexible sides and aren’t bulky in between the legs. And they have cute Elmos on them to boot.

Let me just highlight one other thing about Pampers. They have a great website. There is tons of information of different developmental stages as well as a personalized deveopmental calendar. Also, if you sign up you will begin to receive lots of coupons in the mail to bring down the price. I know these are pricier diapers, but if you use coupons and look for sales, they can become very affordable. Or you can start a blog and beg companies to send you free stuff like diapers. Whatever works…

Works For Me Wednesday- Be “That” mom January 29, 2008

Filed under: Works for me Wednesdays — thediaperdiaries @ 10:22 pm

worksformewednesday.jpg My least favorite part of living in Michigan is the weather. Which is frankly a REALLY large part of living in Michigan. We all tolerate it for the 4 months of the year where the weather is really great and we delude ourselves into thinking there are so many “great winter activities” that it is worth it the rest of the time. I seriously question that wisdom. Especially since I partake in next to none of those fabulous “winter activities” and have begun to seriously question whether the sun is just something people have made up to taunt me.

Anywho, we have some nasty weather here this evening. This led me to call my in-laws who would be driving in from about 20 minutes away to babysit and tell them not to risk their lives so I could go to book club. This bums me out cause I really liked the book and it is always a good time and there is always wine and chocolate involved. So the hubby had a work dinner and I am home with the kids. To be honest I was a bit bummed.

I think I am a good mom, but I am not one of those “sit down and make crafts that rival something Martha Stewart makes with your kids all afternoon ” kind of moms. I am also not a “sure I will dress up as a princess and pretend for hours on end with you” kind of moms. At the most I am a “ok, I guess we can bake cookies, but only if you do it exactly my way and don’t spill anything or make a mess” kind of mom. Doesn’t that just scream fun to you??

Not tonight though. Tonight I was “that mom.” The mom that ran a bath for the girls and then jumped in with them, splashing water all over the floor and squirting them with bath toys. The mom that turns on the Ipod and dances like no ones watching, giggling so hard at our dance moves that my tummy hurts. The mom that gives her girls brownies right before bed time and lets them eat them in the middle of the floor. The mom that reads a few extra books even though it is a little past bed time. I really like being that mom. Sometimes I wish she would come out to play a little more often. I have a feeling my kids do to…

Me Time January 28, 2008

Filed under: Motherhood — thediaperdiaries @ 10:09 pm

pedicure.jpg  So I hate feet. I think I have mentioned it before, but it bears repeating. I am not a fan of feet. This bothers my husband who firmly believes I should love every inch of him. I love all the important parts so who really cares about the feet. Sometimes his feet will accidentally cross over onto my side of the bed and graze mine and I jump 2 feet off the bed. And cold feet…that is the epitome of torture. Seriously if you ever want to break me, just stick some feet in my face and I will squeal like a stuffed pig.

I don’t know where this comes from. I love my kiddie’s feet, but I know there is a threshold for that. Right now they are little and cute. Soon they will be big and sweaty. Maybe I have some repressed foot moment that has scarred me for life. Maybe I should seek some therapy. Lately though I have been comforted by reading in other’s blogs that they have some sort of foot phobia too. Is podophobia a treatable condition?

Actually, I can’t have true podophobia, cause that would include a dislike of people touching my feet. I can think of few things I enjoy more. My favorite part of a full body massage is the feet and I love to indulge in a good pedicure. It’s one of my favorite ways to relax when I get a moment away from the kiddos. I have even found a pedicure place that will let you bring some wine and food. Is that the ultimate? Sitting in a massage chair with your feet in a warm bath sipping on some wine and eating some chocolate. That’s my definition of some “Me Time.”

Another Bloggy Giveaway January 27, 2008

Filed under: Contest — thediaperdiaries @ 9:19 pm

bloggygiveaways.jpg So our dear Shannon has basically decided that the children of blogging parents can pretty much raise themselves. I don’t know how else to explain the fact she has decided to start regularly hosting the “Bloggy Giveaways Carnival.” When I get thousands of people coming to my blog and I spend days on end checking out other people’s blogs in a mad rush to win gift certificates to Target, some kids are getting seriously neglected. So if you see my children running amok in the streets, please return them to me and don’t bother alerting social services. Rumor has it they are blogging too.

Anywho, I will once again be giving away a product from my mother’s fabulous line of products, Script-Yours. Like in the fall, I will be giving away a personalized scripture name

These are hand written and can be customized for the winner. You can pick your colors, you can pick your scripture, you can pick your name (you can pick your nose, you can pick your friends, but you can’t pick your friends nose…yes, it’s the same joke). Each name is personally prayed over with the scripture before it is shipped out.

We have chosen scriptures for each of our girls and had names done for them. I also give them out when my friends have babies. The result is always the same. People are amazed and touched by such a personal and unique gift. It also is a powerful way to bring scriptures into your home.

In addition, anyone who doesn’t win and would still like to order any products from Script-Yours can receive 20% off any order placed before February 15th by mentioning my blog when ordering.

So to enter, just leave me a comment and I will draw at random on Saturday, February 2 at midnight. This contest is open to US residents only (sorry), but you don’t have to have a blog to enter. Now head on over to here to enter a few hundred more of these babies!

** This challange has been closed. See here for winner.

Two Memes for your reading pleasure January 26, 2008

Filed under: Meme — thediaperdiaries @ 8:20 pm

meme.jpg I was tagged for 2 memes this week, so I am doubling up and making this unofficial meme day! I will be celebrating with wine and chocolate, but that is just me.

First, I was tagged by Adventure Mom for the Mommy Meme

1.           How long have you been a Mom? 4 ½ years

2.          How many children call you Mommy? 2

 3.          Girl? Boy? or both?: 2 girls

4.          Did you know what you were having? Absolutely, I can’t stand the suspense

5.           How old were you when you became a Mom? 28

6.          How long were you in labor? With Lily my water broke at 8 am and I had her around 8 pm. But I was only in hard labor for half of that time.  Hannah was born 53 minutes after I walked in the hospital door.

7.           What’s your favorite thing about being a Mom? moments like finding this note next to my bed.  Priceless!

8.          What’s your least favorite thing? not being able to “fix it” when they are sad or hurt

9.          Do you want more kids? absolutely

10.       Do you plan on having more soon? yep, but right now we are practicing (See The Challenge)

11.        How many times have you been pee’d on? Not many, the benefit of girls J

12.       Barfed on? Actually on? I don’t think so, Lily has good aim.

13.        Is your child named after anyone? Lily’s middle name is after the hubby’s grandmother. We discovered that Hannah’s (real) name is a family name on my side, but didn’t know that until after the fact. Her middle name is after my dad’s sister who was killed by a drunk driver.

14.       How did you come up with their name? Lily’s (real) name we both loved from the start. Hannah’s name was found in a baby book after we couldn’t agree on either the name Hannah or Lily (hence their blogging names)

15.        When your child gets in trouble, who is the bad guy? We both trade off playing good cop and bad cop. We are actually excellent partners in this. Whenever one of us is beginning to lose patience or raising voices, the other usually calmly steps in. Of course that doesn’t help when the hubby is at work…

16.       What is the longest you have been away from your children? 5 days during our trip to London

17.        Bedtime routine? Sometimes a bath, Hannah gets a book and a snuggle. Lily gets a book, bible study, prayer time and some snuggling

18.       Are your toes painted? Always in the summer. In the winter they are often in their current state of 2 month old polish that is mostly chipped off. Classy.

19.       Last movie you saw in the theater? Veggie Tales.  Before that who knows.

20.      One thing you will not give up just because you’re a mom? Fashionable hair and clothes. No mom jeans allowed!!

21.       One thing you did give up now that you’re a mom: A lot of spontaneity

22.      Best Mom perk: Seriously so many things. I absolutely love being a mom

23.      Snack, you sneak bites from your child? I have a weakness for fruit snacks

24.      When the kid is napping, you are: Catching up on email and then hopefully a quick nap myself

25.       Where is your child(ren) now? Eating breakfast

26.      Favorite place to buy maternity clothes? Old Navy and Target

27.       If I could do it over…I would love to think I would gain less weight when I am pregnant, but who are we kidding…

Secondly, Mama Mia tagged me for another meme. Here are the rules.:Link to the person that tagged you and post the rules on your blog. Share 5 random and/or weird facts about yourself on your blog or share the 5 top places on your “want to see or want to see again” list or share 5 things you never pictured being in your future when your were 25 years old. Tag a minimum of 5, maximum of 10 random people at the end of your post and include links to their blogs. Let each person know that they have been tagged by leaving a comment on their blog. The tagees have a choice of which they want to do.

I given you 100 random things and a 7 random things post. How many more random things can I possibly come up with? So I think I will do the top 5 places one.

  1. Asia: I studied in Japan, Taiwan and China when I was in college. My college frequently offers alumni tours through the region. Someday, my dream is to go back and show my hubby the places that were such a meaningful part of my life.
  2. Eastern Europe: Prague, Budapest, Krakow. I have heard they are all stunningly beautiful. Cheesily, I would also like to head over to Austria and do the Sound of Music Tour.
  3. Sonoma Valley: The hubby and I LOVE wine so I would love to find some romantic B & B and taste away!
  4. Vancouver:I have heard it is really beautiful. And I would love to try out the skiing.
  5. Placencia, Belize:We went to an amazing resort on our honeymoon and LOVED Belize. The hubby and I hope to return for our 10 year anniversary.

*notice none of the above locations are all that kid friendly. Accident? I think not…

Now for the taggin’. Here are your assignments.

Mommy meme: Misty, LAB, MamaMia (gotcha back), Candi and Anne (a BRAND NEW MOMMY!!!)

5 Things: Heather, Olivia, SCW, Big Binder, and Nicole

Let the meme-ing begin!!!

Week 16- Try a nooner

Filed under: The Challenge — thediaperdiaries @ 12:17 am

sex-challenge.gif Yeah, you read that right. Where is it written that sex has to be at night? Yes, it’s dark and the kids are in bed, but how tired are you? Most days, I am so exhausted by the end of the day it is all I can do to climb up the stairs and into bed.

Now, I realize an actual nooner is probably out of the question most days. The hubby is at work and the kids keep annoyingly expect you to feed them. However, last week you shook up the location, maybe this week you can shake up the time of day.

Set the alarm a little before the kids wake up and start your day with a bang. Or would it be so wrong to stick the kids in front of some morning cartoons and head upstairs? You know they could zone out for hours in front of the tube and truth be told you don’t really need near that long (maybe you could squeeze in a nap too). Or try when the kids are napping, just make sure the door is locked in case of an early wake up. If you really want to be adventurous wake up your hubby in the middle of the night. I have a feeling he won’t mind…
